On May 14, 2013 our red San Juan rabbit gave birth to 9 baby bunnies. I was so excited. I just love baby bunnies. On May 15, I found 2 dead in the cage. On May 16, I found the last 7 all over the place - on the floor, in neighboring cages and some had bloody bite marks. I tried to put the babies back in Red's nest but she wouldn't have anything to do with them. 2 more died that afternoon. Now, I have fostered puppies, kittens and chickens, but never bunnies. I knew hand raising baby bunnies was usually not successful, but being the person I am - I just had to try. I removed the last 5 from the nest and took them inside the house. My husband just about flipped his lid, but one look from me and he shut up. He knows better than to stand between me and animals.
I parked the them in the pantry because is has a door to keep the kitties out. I put a heat lamp close to the nesting box to keep them warm but not hot. I heated up some kitten formula that I keep on hand for just these kind of emergencies. I started feeding them with an eye dropper. Things seemed to be going well for a couple of days, then tragedy - 3 of the 5 babies died. I was so sad. What was I doing wrong? Off to surf the Internet to figure this out before I lost the other 2. After reading information from several different sites, I was able to determine that I needed to add heavy cream or half and half to the formula. I didn't have exact measurements so I just eyeballed it. It must have worked.
The bunnies are happy, healthy and full of spunk. At the time of this writing, they are 44 days old. They are eating pellets, carrots, grass, organic lettuce (I had some extra and thought I would share) and celery. They also love the herb/weed known as plantain. They are growing so fast! Everyday, they get play time in the master bathroom. Why there? It has tile floor (easy clean up of bunny messes) and I can close the door to keep stalker kitties and rough-housing doggies out! They can run and jump to their hearts content without fear of being pounced on or used as a chew toy.
I had to move them from the cardboard box they called home to a larger, better secured bird cage. Now it seems it is time to move them to a more permanent home. They need a hutch. I don't have a hutch. I am not going to buy a hutch because I think they are way over priced so I guess that means I am going to have to build a hutch. It is going to have to built this weekend or next because I fear that they are going to get too big to get out of the cage! I have to keep the cage door wired shut (unless it's play time or feeding time) because they can push it open. Going to surf the net again to get some ideas then go raid the scrap pile to see if I have enough supplies. I want to see if I can do this without spending ANY money. I will post pictures of the bunnies as soon as my phone quits arguing with me.
Oh and the bunnies have temporary names Scratch -because of the terrible wound on his neck and his damaged right paw when he came inside. (which has completely healed and he has full use of his paw now.) and Spaz - I think you can figure this out. My son and I want to change their names to suit their personalities, but they will still keep their nick names.

Are things looking up?
Well, it has been a few months since my last blog. Just haven't been in the mood to type anything. Since February, we did take a cheap vacation that didn't turn out so well. My husband did get a job - that he absolutely hates - they treat him like poop. He's been in the hospital with a serious bacterial infection. We adopted 3 horses. I had a job interview on June 10th and made it to the 2nd round. That round won't happen until a certain person gets back from vacation on Monday. I am so hoping I get this job. It is only 6 miles from my house and it's 8-5 most of the time instead of 10-7 with an hour commute each way. This company also offers full benefits - which means hubby could quit his job and go into the hay cutting business that he wants to do. I know - a lot of risk, but it could be worth it. He and a neighbor are working on the detail. We took our 12 acre field out of the CRP program - wasn't happy with the requirement to spray Monsanto's Round-up products - they make enough money poisoning our food supply and I'm not going to help them.
We are currently babysitting a friend's puppy while they are vacation for the 2nd time this year. He's a sweet puppy, but he keeps pooping in my bedroom - even after we take him outside. Frustrating - thought I was past the puppy phase of having dogs!
I am currently bottle feeding 2 orphan rabbits. Their mama is a Red San Juan mix, but refused to care for her litter of 8. These 2 are the only ones left - they are almost 4 weeks old now. Starting to reject the formula because they are eating grass, pellets and carrots. I have installed a water bottle for them, too. I guess I am adding 2 more pets to the herd as I told my hubby that they were not getting sold and they were not going in the freezer. He just frowned. I've worked way too hard to keep them alive thus far. Going to try to figure out to build a hutch for them with scraps and a little farmgirl ingenuity. We'll see what happens.
I failed miserably with my seed starting this year. Oh - it started out great, until I put them outside to harden off and I forgot about them until about 2 weeks later. They were certainly crispy. Oh well. We have direct sowed many other seeds and things are growing. We have some volunteer pumpkins coming up in some very strange places, too.
Hubby built 4 raised beds for me. He also built 2 stalls in the barn and we are going to start on a 3rd one this weekend. My 2 year old horse is at the trainers for the month and so we have put off building it. We put the 10 year old in his stall and the 15 year old in her own custom built stall. She's only 28 inches tall so everything had to be built to scale for her. Seems to working.
That's it for today - getting ready to head home from work. Yes - I did this while at work. I can do things like this while at work because we are a very slow store. As long as we help customers when they walk in, the boss doesn't really care what we do. That's one thing I will miss. See ya' next time.

How's the house? Oh- going glamping, too!
Well, the house looks more like a house these days. It has felt paper and ice/water barrier, it has windows, doors and duct work. The electrician has made his marks for rough in. The plumber will be out this week or next to mark rough ins for plumbing. The roofing material should be arriving soon as well as the bricks. The porches need to be built, as well. I am getting more and more excited as it moves along. How soon to move in? Could be end of summer, but most likely just before Thanksgiving. Let's hope for the earlier! I really hate moving in the winter.
We have decided to paint the interior ourselves along with a few friends? (Anyone else want to join us?) Free food and beverages along with good conversation will be the pay! Thanks to all of you who are going to help! We love you.
Taking a break this weekend and going glamping. Yes, I said glamping - google it if you don't know what it is. I can hardly wait. We are going with our good friends Amy and Aaron and their two boys. All told we will have 7 people and 5 dogs - what a herd. Campfire cooking, s'mores and gold panning. Sounds like fun! We don't really expect to find any gold, but it's fun trying. Hopefully the rain in the forecast won't last to long and the creek won't come up too much. (Calling for an inch or more tonight into Friday) Biting my nails.
Hubs is at home trying to get the fishing gear ready - he's had more than a month to get prepared, but true to his nature, waits until the night before. I have just about everything else ready to go, just have to pack it up. Everything is staged in the corner of my bedroom. Looks like a campers garage sale waiting to happen.
Speaking of garage sales - going to have one when we get back from glamping. We've accumulated at bunch of stuff a auctions that we just don't need. Those of you who know where we are living - watch craigslist for the dates.
In other news, today is hubby's last day of work at Traderbaker's Vendor Mall. He's fed up with it. He's going to set up at flea markets and such to make up for his piddly lost income. Hopefully he can make a few bucks here and there. Biting my nails, again.
Not much more to add. Just about time to go home from work. It was a pretty slow day today. Having company dinner tomorrow evening - Red Lobster - bosses choice. Yay, shrimp.
Have a great weekend and see you next week!

How do you depreciate the value of a pet's life?
When our house burned down, I never thought dealing with the insurance company could be so blood boiling. I've mentioned how we have to write down everything we can remember that we lost and how much we paid for it. Then the insurance company will depreciate it. After that, they send us money to buy the item back, but things cost more these days. If it costs more to replace than we paid, they supposedly will send the difference. Ok so our sofa cost about $2,000 when it was new 5 years ago. I don't know how to figure the depreciation, but say they will send us $1,000 for the sofa. How are we supposed to repurchase the same sofa with only $1,000? I don't understand.
Well, how in the hell do you put a price on the life of a pet? Are they going to depreciate his value because he was 11 years old and a cat can live for more than 20 years? Is he less valuable because we adopted him? Because he was declawed? Because he was neutered? WTF? I just don't get it. He can't be replaced. Zeke was Zeke. Every pet is different their own special way. His life was priceless.

Teaka, the English Shepherd
Even though I just wrote about losing a pet, I wanted to share another picture of a beautiful girl we adopted on Valentines Day 2012. The other picture I posted was kinda dark and didn't show how pretty she really is. So, without further adieu, I reintroduce TEAKA.

This was Zeke. I adopted him in 2004 from an animal shelter that, at that time, only charged $10 for any animal. He was fixed and de-clawed. The shelter thought he was about 4 years old when I got him. He was skinny when I got him and he never didn't gain any weight even thought I left the food bowl full all the time. Zeke was very independent, unless I sat down. Then he was all about being held and loved on. He was a snuggler. This picture was taken in 2010 shortly after we brought little Albert inside. At first Zeke would have nothing to do with him, but Albert was persistent and Zeke finally caved in. He really was a big softy, he just didn't want anyone to know it. We had him until October 7, 2011. I am not certain, but I think he perished in the fire. Lance said as he was running out of the house calling 911 and kitty, kitty, kitty, he thought he saw Zeke running the other direction. Zeke looked confused. I hope his death was quick and he didn't suffer. We have never found any trace of him. I know it sounds gross, but I would like to know for sure. It would mean closure for all of us. Some friends have suggested that maybe he did get out and is hiding somewhere. Even is he did get out he wouldn't have survived the winter. Zeke hated being cold. He always slept in front of the wood stove when the weather was cold. I miss him.

Why are Dogs so hard to adopt?
Keep in mind that this is my opinion and if you don't like it - you don't have to continue to read it.
Most places do background checks to make sure you can afford to care for the animal.
They want a visible fence in the yard - not invisible fence
They want proof of vet visits - even years later - Hello - ever heard of Holistic Pet care? You don't have to go to the vet for everything.
Some limit the number of people and animals in the home. - Hello? If someone has the money and time and love for animals - who cares?
The applications are very personal. They want to know your utilities, rent/mortgage, ins, grocery expenses - I'm sorry that's none of your freaking business!
Oh and there's the outrageous adoption fees. I understand that caring for animals is expensive, but to charge $250 or more for a dog that no one wanted - then complain about overcrowding? I have no problem with charging a fee to help cover food, overhead and what not, but some of that is just greed. Then to whine and beg for more money because they have too many animals! These places need to make adopting more appealing to the masses. Do the math.
Adoption fee $250
Vet visit $150 or more depending on your location
Food 1st bag $30 also depending on brand could be $15 to $100
Misc toys $50
Treats $30
Heartworm $75 again depending on breed of dog
Flea prev. $40 " "
Your already at $625 and you don't even have the dog home yet! Don't forget the leash, collar, crate and, if you do this, clothing! Your looking at close to a $1000 just to bring a dog home!
Now in my area, we have 2 kinds of vets - ones that charge for every little thing and one, only one, that will only charge what needs to be charged to cover costs and not try empty my wallet. The one vet wanted to charge me an office visit for each animal even though I was bringing them in all at one time. That was $120 just to walk in the door with 4 critter. Then it was $40 for this, $30 for that, $60 for that, $50 for the other. Oh and $180 for neutering an 8lb dog. $480 just for shots, testing and a minor procedure.
The less expensive vet charge $50 for all the testing and $70 for neutering. $120 vs $480 - where do you think I'm going to go? Unfortunately that vet is getting on in years and won't be around a whole lot longer. I am saddened to think that our community will lose a great country vet and be forced fed overpriced vet clinics.
Like I said before I have two dogs. One is a purebred mini dachshund that we paid a huge AKC price for. Then the breed ripped us off by never sending the AKC paperwork. Wanted another HUGE price for that! He's a sweet dog, but not very smart. Our other dog is a Finish Spitz/Chihuahua mix shelter dog that I adopted in 2007 for a whopping $10. He's the sweetest, smartest, most loyal animal I have ever had. As for the 2 cats (we had three but lost one in a house fire), they are barn cats that tugged on our heartstrings so much we had to bring them inside. The cat we lost in the fire was a shelter cat also. I adopted him in 2003. He was about 4 years old then. I'm guessing he was 11 or 12 at the time of the fire. His adoption fee was only $5 from a city shelter. His name was Zeke, but I called him my "Lil' Old Man". He loved to snuggle and if I sat down for more than 5 minutes he was in my lap.
So you see - I don't have a problem with shelter animals. It's the crazy demands and processes it now takes to adopt an animal from them. That being said, the next animal I take into my home will not be from an overpriced shelter, but from a free ad in the paper or on craigslist or something.

Looks as though Zeke has the right idea for these bitter cold days we've been having. It a bit warmer today than it has been. Looks like a balmy 26 degrees out there. The horses are enjoying 2 bales of hay and the ducks and chickens are enjoying some sunshine. Yesterday, after we discovered a broken frozen pipe, we called the plumber. They were able to fix one problem, but when we turned the water on, we found another. They asked us if we thought we could make thru the weekend w/o running water because if they came back on Monday it would so much cheaper. We are waiting until Monday. We shoveled snow in the horse tank. After that load melts, we add more. One strange thing that has happened since the plumbers were here though, is the outside cats have found a secret passage that somehow leads IN THE HOUSE!! I haven't found it yet, but I think it is around the old furnace. We don't use it anymore because it was so inefficient. The plumbers had to remove some of the duct work to get to some of the pipes. I am just sure that is where the kitties are getting in! AND if they are getting in - what else can get in- oh the thought!!!!!
I really hate not being able to do laundry. (did that sound sincere?) No - really - I like doing laundry. The only problem is since I didn't get to it last weekend from helping my mother, the mountain is growing! It will take a week to get caught up. We only use the dryer for my uniforms because of the lint. We even went out and purchased another wooden drying rack. Now I have three. I line them up in front of the pellet burner and let the heat from that dry the clothes. It also helps add moisture to the air. As much as I like the pellet burner, it really dries the air out!
Another drawback to not having water is that no dishes are getting done. We are trying to use compostable tableware, but unfortunately, we are eating out frequently. I am out of pans to cook in. I was holding out, trying not to buy water, but I am afraid we are going to have to get a couple jugs anyway. We are using hand sanitizer and baby wipes to clean up with. What about the bathroom, you ask - Well we have that covered as well. You see, a while back, my husband read about making a port-a-pot out of a 5-gallon bucket, wood shavings, and an old hose winder. You know the square kind that is supposed to look nicer next to the spiggot that a coiled up hose. Our plan was to take it with us when we went trail riding with the horses since, a lot of times there are not bathrooms close by. I guess you can say we are roughing it. It doesn't smell too bad.....you just have to layer in a bunch of shavings after you "go". It sure beats having to spend money on a hotel room or going outside!! Afterall, we are still going to have a hefty plumber's bill.
Thanks for reading. Leave a comment if you wish.

Greetings to all
Well isn't this nice. I am new to this blogging thing so bear with me as I learn by making mistakes.
I am a farmgirl from Indiana and am learning the organic way of life. I have always liked the outdoors and animals. We have 2 horses, 2 dogs, 13 cats, several chickens and 2 ducks.
Our horses are Doc, 15 y/o Arab/Morgan pony (1 inch from being a horse) and Rocket. Rocket is a 4 y/o quarter horse that was a rescue from an abusive owner. He is from the "IMPRESSIVE" bloodline and had the blood disorder that is famous with that line.
Harvey is 7 y/o black lab and Henry is a 6 y/o Finnish Spitz/Chihuahua (looks like a fox).
Zeke is our 7y/o house cat adopted from an animal shelter (the same one Henry came from). We have 12 more barn cats: Tippy, Momo, Skippy, Shadow, Smokey Joe, Chesapeake, Dobby, Betty, Frostie, Cujo, Junebug and Rajah.
Bubba and Duck Tape are the two ducks and the only chicken we have left that is named is the rooster, VADER. We have several hens, but none named.
My tractor is a 1941 Farmall M in great shape except that we can't get it started right now. My husband is not much of a mechanic and I haven't had time to look at it. My 92 y/o grandpa told me several things to check and hubby has, but he still can't get it going. I think it may have moisture in the gas.....(to be continued)
I have been married for 15 years and we have 1 child together. Lliam is 8 and is a high functioning autistic also known as Asperger's Syndrome. He is a very bright child, but socially backwards. Looks a lot like Opie.
Well, I guess this is enough to start with since I am tired (1230 am and I have to work tomorrow!!)
Good night.
